I have several guitar building books, and as you can imagine there are many ways to go about the project. It was only when I was recommended the Roy Courtnall - Making Master Guitars book that I felt I had enough information to actually get started.
Naturally there are endless sources of information on the Internet and I certainly researched how others approach certain steps, but I do believe that this book is the only one where you could actually complete a fine instrument without any other information. Also, the sequence of the work is very clear and represents (to me) the ideal way to approach the build. You also get a great set of plans from renown luthiers along with detailed descriptions of their guitars and their approach to the craft.
You can find more details of the book here:

Glad I found this blog (; I also bought Roy Courtnall's book ran into a problem. I understand the arching of the the solera puts the dome on the soundboard, I think, but the section on glowing the fan struts doesn't, as far as I can see so far, say whether the struts are shaped to the dollar's arch or if so, how it's done. Can you tell me if I'm missing something?

Hi Ian - I didn't shape the fan struts to the solera. They are quite flexible and when clamped to the soundboard adjust to the shape. I think that this also adds a little tension to the soundboard when glued that you wouldn't get if you shaped them.
